AACR 2016: Off the Bench: A Guide to Cancer Research Careers Beyond the Traditional Academic Path, Organized by the Associate Member Council (AMC)

Sunday, Apr 17, 2016, 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM
Grand Salon B, Hilton New Orleans Riverside

Non-traditional careers - those that do not follow the traditional academic tenure-track path - are instrumental in the development and progress of cancer research. However there is currently little exposure to non-traditional career tracks during the typical academic training experience and academically-trained individuals do not always know if they are proficient at skills necessary to excel in these lesser-known positions.

In this session, participants will hear from leaders in academia, industry, government, and non-profit sectors who are making strides in the cancer research field, each in their own unique way. Drawing from their experiences, speakers will expose participants to a broad array of non-traditional career paths and provide them with practical advice on how to prepare for and get established in these unique careers tracks.

The Associate Member Council organizes several Professional Advancement Sessions aimed specifically toward the professional needs of graduate students, medical students and residents, and clinical and postdoctoral fellows. Each year the topics change to cover a broad range of interests relevant to early-career scientists. For AACR members, Professional Advancement Sessions are free with your Annual Meeting registration and are an added benefit of your membership. For nonmembers, there is an additional fee of $50 for attendance at each session to be paid on site. Participation is on a first-come, first-served basis, and space is limited. Nonmembers are required to pay on site. #AACRcareer #AACRAMC #AACR16
